What Is A Personal Brand?
"So what is a personal brand?", I hear you say.
You personal brand is a combination of your skills, experience, reputation and all the other attributes and qualities you have that make you, you.
In the beginning, I didn't even know what my personal brand was. Having worked in corporate for many years and without realising it, I had adopted my employer's brand. When I talked about myself, it was through my employer's lens. I'd talk about my employer's mission and their goals (which is fair enough given I work for them).
I rarely purposely promoted my own personal brand. So when I left my employer to start my own business, I struggled initially to work out what my personal brand is. But I knew it was something I needed to get my head around fairly quickly so that potential clients knew what I stood for.
Here is my two-step personal branding plan:
Step 1: Discover Your Personal Brand - Fortunately I discovered an exercise which found the heart of my personal brand. It gives you revealing and honest assessment of yourself and what you really want to be known for.
You see, you have a personal brand whether you like it or not. So you want people to know you for who you really are and what you really stand for, rather than something you're not. This is imperative to attract soul-aligned clients.
Step 2: Promote Your Personal Brand - What I now realise, revealing your true personal brand is like an onion - it has layers (Shrek anyone?). What I mean by this is that you will share more and more insights about yourself as time goes and as you feel comfortable. You will peel back more and more of your personal brand layers.
I'm not saying the goal is to be a complete open book, you're allowed to have some secrets. But you will give more, become more vulnerable and share more teachable moments.
And your aligned clients will appreciate your authenticity and you showing up unapologetically. I know this from experience as by following these two steps, my business has gone from strength to strength.
